The 40% problem: why your European traffic doesn't convert
Four in ten shoppers won't buy from a site that isn't in their language. Fewer say why. The reasons are hiding in your returns page.
The stat everyone quotes
CSA Research surveyed 8,709 consumers in 29 countries: 76% prefer to buy in their own language, 40% won't buy from sites that don't offer it. The number is real. What it doesn't tell you is where the 40% actually bail. It isn't the homepage. It's the moments of commitment: the size selector, the shipping promise, the returns policy, the payment step.
Where commitment happens
A shopper will forgive an English headline. They won't forgive a returns note they can't parse, a size chart that needs a calculator, or a checkout that suddenly switches tone. These pages carry the trust load of your store — and they're exactly the pages that get translated last, or never.
The fix is smaller than you think
You don't need your whole catalog in German this quarter. You need the twenty products that pay the bills and the five pages where commitment happens, written for a German reader by someone who knows why they hesitate. That's a 10-day job, not a 6-month program.
